18. How To Call On Your Future Self As your OG Biz Coach
Well, hello, you sweet thang. I am so stoked for this conversation. Is it a conversation if it’s a solo episode? Questionable. Welcome to my conversation of one. I’m pretty sure that’s called a monologue, but here we are.
I’ve been reading a phenomenal book called Be Your Future Self Now by Dr. Ben Hardy. He’s an organizational psychologist, PhD, and a brilliant thinker. His work has been so impactful for my business. His book 10x is Easier Than 2x, co-authored with Dan Sullivan, was a game-changer. It’s a simple yet potent concept that has influenced my approach to business and decision-making.
This idea of becoming your future self now is incredibly powerful. Cait Scudder was one of the first people who introduced me to the concept—are you making decisions based on the rearview mirror, or are you looking ahead? If you let your past dictate your future, you’ll likely repeat patterns, settle for mediocrity, or even feel stuck in boredom.
Entrepreneurs, creatives, and visionaries—those who bring big ideas to life—must embrace a certain level of insanity. You have to believe in something that doesn’t yet exist and trust it will come to fruition. Until you do it, you might sound delusional. But once you’ve accomplished it, suddenly, it’s obvious.
Making Decisions From Your Future Self
If you’re deciding whether to join a mastermind or the gym, ask yourself: Would my future self tell me to do this? You don’t wait to build muscle before joining the gym—you join to develop the strength. The same applies to business investments. If future me—the one making six figures consistently—were advising me, would she tell me to invest in financial literacy or business growth? Absolutely.
Our present selves are wired for comfort. The reptilian brain craves familiarity, avoids spending, and resists risk. But every successful person I know is constantly dancing with risk. Success isn’t about eliminating it but becoming comfortable navigating it.
Scheduling Your Future Self
One of my favorite takeaways from the book is the idea of scheduling your future self and your habits now. If you want to be an Olympic figure skater, your calendar should reflect that—lessons, practice sessions, training. If your schedule doesn’t include these things, your goal isn’t real.
For example, I love speaking. Years ago, I had a speaking manager, but it wasn’t a great fit. So I let it go, convincing myself I was too busy. But that meant I wasn’t taking action to book more speaking engagements. Now, I dedicate two hours weekly to securing speaking opportunities, appearing on podcasts, and pitching myself. My calendar now reflects my future self’s goals.
Dolly Parton writes a song every day. She said in an interview that if she writes 365 songs in a year, a couple of them are bound to be hits. Her prolific habit creates success. The same applies to business—consistent action yields results.
Eliminate Lesser Goals
Another powerful concept in the book is eliminating lesser goals. A quote that stuck with me: If you have more than three goals, you don’t have any. As a multi-passionate person, this hit hard. It’s about focusing energy on what truly matters.
If you want to be a Grammy-winning songwriter, you probably aren’t spending hours perfecting a TikTok strategy. If you want to be a public speaker, you aren’t prioritizing meal-prepping every meal from scratch. There’s always a trade-off. True success requires saying no to lesser priorities.
Success Comes From Being True to Your Future Self
It’s easy to stay busy with small tasks, but are those tasks moving you toward your biggest goal? Checking things off a to-do list feels good, but the real question is: Did you do the one big thing that actually matters?
If you visualize your future self, the one who has achieved your dream, your current to-do list becomes crystal clear. Pregnant women, for example, prioritize birth classes and meal trains because they know future them will need those things. Entrepreneurs should apply the same thinking.
Ask for What You Want
A huge theme in the book is the power of asking. If you don’t ask, you don’t receive. If you have a business, are you inviting people into your offers? Are you directly telling them, Hey, I have spots in my mastermind—want in?
Keisha Urbaniak, author of Unbound: A Woman’s Guide to Power, suggests making a habit of asking every day. If it’s uncomfortable, start small—ask a stranger for a favor, ask a friend for support. It’s not about taking; it’s about giving people a role in your life. People like being included, and they can always say no.
Your Environment Determines Your Success
One of the biggest saboteurs to our future self is an unaware environment. If you’re not in the right space, you’re failing by default. Olympic skaters need an ice rink. Business owners need an environment that fosters success.
For me, working in a beautiful coffee shop or my thoughtfully designed office keeps me inspired. Beyond physical space, the energetic environment matters too—being around ambitious, visionary women who normalize big goals fuels me.
If you tuned into Ep 12 💸 How To Go From $40K to $0 Months in 5 Easy Steps you'll know that last year, after a few different mastermind and coaching containers I was in wrapped up, I decided to hold off on diving into anything new to “save money.” The result? I also lost momentum and income. Having people who support and challenge you is invaluable.
